Damascene art is an ancient decorative technique where different metals, typically gold or silver, are inlayed in darkly oxidized steel backgrounds to form intricate patterns, images, or motifs. Our first Damascene dial is in the Neo-Mudejar style and pays homage to the famed Spanish architect Narciso Clavería whose coffered ceiling patterns adorn the Toledo train station.

The term “Damascene” stems from Damascus, the city which was said to have played a central role in perfecting and spreading the craft. Later on, Damascene thrived in the Iberian peninsula especially in Toledo, as a result of Islamic colonization. Today, Spanish Damascening (especially from Toledo) is world-renowned and is thought to be one of the few remaining locations where artisans still carry on the traditions of this ancient art form.

MEET THE ARTIST BEHIND THE ART

RAQUEL DE LA TORRE

Since the emergence of industrial damascene imitations in the 1970s, traditional damascening has suffered from misrepresentation and confusion. The market became saturated with mass-produced pieces that bear only a superficial resemblance to the true art, creating a misleading impression for those discovering it for the first time. Today, countless objects are adorned with these industrial imitations — lacking the soul, precision, and artistry of a piece meticulously crafted by hand. Our mission is to preserve and promote the true essence of damascene art: works created with patience, mastery, and deep cultural heritage. Each piece is hand-decorated using traditional techniques, and reimagined through contemporary accessories that bring this ancient craft into modern life. In this collaboration, we have adapted fully handmade damascene designs into the luxury timepieces of OAN.GIO. These dials are not merely decorative — they are a fusion of precision engineering and centuries-old craftsmanship. Every dimension was carefully respected to ensure a seamless integration, and every line of gold inlay placed with thoughtful precision. The design process demanded absolute care, as even the slightest deviation could compromise the delicate balance between art and function. Through projects like this, we remain committed to sharing the true legacy of damascening — its intricate techniques, its cultural depth, and the irreplaceable value of a piece made entirely by hand. This is not just decoration — it is living heritage, and it must be passed on with authenticity and respect.
